Gutter Repair: When to Fix vs Replace in the RGV
Gutters are the unglamorous half of every roof system. They cost a fraction of the roof itself but cause more callbacks than the roof does — sagging, leaking, separating from fascia, dumping water at the foundation. In the Rio Grande Valley, gutter problems hide damage to soffit, fascia, and even your slab. Knowing when to repair and when to replace saves real money.
Repair or replace? The 5-question test
Run through these before deciding:
1. Age: Are gutters more than 15 years old? → Lean replace. 2. Damage scope: Is more than 25% of the run damaged? → Replace. 3. Sectional separation: Are seams pulling apart in multiple locations? → Replace. 4. Sagging or pulling away from fascia: Multiple sections? → Replace. 5. Foundation impact: Are you seeing water-related damage at foundation or in basement? → Replace + fix grading.
If 3+ answers point to replace, replace. If only 1, repair is fine.
Repair scenarios (do these instead of replacing)
### 1. Single seam leak
Symptoms: drip from one section seam during rain. Older sectional aluminum gutters separate at seams as the home shifts.
Fix: dismantle that section, clean both edges, apply gutter sealant, reassemble. $150-$300.
### 2. Loose hangers / sagging in one spot
Symptoms: gutter sags 1-2" over a 6-10ft section. Hangers pulled out of fascia.
Fix: replace hangers with hidden screw hangers into solid fascia. If fascia is rotted, fascia repair first ($200-$600), then re-hang.
### 3. Downspout disconnection
Symptoms: water dumps at one corner during rain. Downspout came loose at top elbow or bottom kickout.
Fix: re-secure with sheet metal screws, re-seal. $75-$200.
### 4. Clogged but otherwise sound
Symptoms: water overflows the front of the gutter during rain.
Fix: clean (annual service, $150-$300). Add gutter guards if you have heavy tree cover. See [Gutter Guards Worth It in the RGV?](/blog/gutter-guards-worth-it-rgv).
### 5. Small punctures or rust pinholes
Symptoms: drips at random points from underside of gutter.
Fix: clean, scuff, apply gutter patch + sealant from inside. $50-$200.
Replace scenarios (don't waste money repairing)
### 1. Multiple seam separations
If 3+ seams have failed, more are about to. The aluminum is fatigued. Replace with seamless gutters (no sectional joints).
### 2. Widespread sagging
If gutters sag along multiple runs, the fascia behind them is usually compromised, and the gutter material itself is fatigued. Replace gutters and inspect/repair fascia simultaneously.
### 3. Galvanized steel gutters with rust
Old galvanized gutters that have rusted through can't be patched effectively. The rust is everywhere even where you can't see it. Replace with aluminum or steel-coated.
### 4. Wrong size for the roof
5" gutters on a roof that needs 6" overflow constantly during heavy RGV rains. Replacing with proper-sized seamless gutters solves the chronic overflow problem.
### 5. After hail or windstorm damage
If gutters took a beating and insurance is paying, this is the time to replace — not patch.

RGV-specific gutter considerations
### Rain volume
When it rains in the RGV, it pours. Tropical downpours dump 2-4"/hour. 5" gutters handle most homes, but big roofs with steep pitch need 6" oversized gutters and 3"x4" oversized downspouts to avoid overflow.
### Heat expansion
Aluminum expands 1/8" per 10 feet per 50°F temperature swing. RGV summer days can hit a 50°F+ swing dawn to mid-afternoon. Sectional gutters with rigid seams fail in this cycle. Seamless gutters handle expansion better.
### Coastal salt
Coastal homes (Brownsville, Port Isabel, South Padre, Laguna Vista) need painted aluminum or stainless hardware. Bare or galvanized hardware streaks rust within 18 months.
### Tree debris
Mesquite, oak, and palm cover most older RGV neighborhoods. Heavy debris loads make annual cleaning critical or gutter guards essential.
When gutters cause real damage
If gutters fail, water dumps right at the foundation. RGV homes on slabs are particularly vulnerable to:
- Foundation movement — uneven moisture under slab causes heaving and cracking. $5,000-$30,000 to repair.
- Soffit and fascia rot — overflowing water saturates wood. $200-$2,000 fascia repair.
- Mosquito breeding — clogged gutters hold standing water for weeks
- Stained siding — overflow streaks brick and stucco
Translation: $1,500 of gutter work prevents $10,000+ of downstream damage. Don't defer.
Gutter guards: worth it?
Short answer: yes if you have heavy tree cover, no if you're in open-yard tract housing. See full breakdown in [Gutter Guards Worth It in the RGV?](/blog/gutter-guards-worth-it-rgv).
Common questions
### How long should gutters last in the RGV?
Aluminum seamless: 20-25 years. Steel: 15-20 years. Copper: 50+ years. Heat and UV are the limiting factors.
### Can I clean my own gutters?
Yes, if you're comfortable on a ladder and your home is single-story. We don't recommend it for two-story or steep roof pitches. Annual professional cleaning is $150-$300.
### Should I match gutter color to trim or roof?
Trim usually. Most RGV homes look best with gutters that match fascia, but it's preference. We can match almost any color.
### Are seamless gutters worth the upgrade?
Yes. Seamless eliminates the most common failure mode (seam leaks) and looks cleaner. Cost difference vs sectional is small.
### Can you do gutters and roof together?
Yes — and we recommend it. Saves a mobilization cost and ensures the gutter system matches the new roof's drainage characteristics.
