Baccaro Roofing GuideShingles or Metal? RGV Roof Decision Guide

May 5, 20266 min read

You're getting roofing quotes and the contractor asks: shingles or metal? Both work fine in the Rio Grande Valley. The right answer depends on five factors, in this order.

The 5-question decision framework

1. How long will you own the home?

  • Less than 7 years: Shingles. Metal's price premium doesn't pay off.
  • 7–15 years: Shingles, unless other factors push you toward metal.
  • 15+ years: Strongly consider metal. Cost-per-year is lower despite higher upfront.

2. What's your insurance discount situation?

  • Carrier offers stackable discounts for both Class 4 shingles AND metal: Almost a wash. Pick on aesthetics or other factors.
  • Carrier offers larger discount for metal: Tilt toward metal — common with State Farm and USAA.
  • Carrier offers no discount: Either choice works equally on the insurance dimension.

3. What's your total budget?

  • Under $15,000: Class 4 architectural shingles. You'll get a great roof.
  • $15,000–$25,000: Class 4 shingles or screw-down metal. Both work.
  • $25,000+: Standing-seam metal becomes viable.

4. Coastal exposure?

  • Inland RGV (McAllen, Edinburg, Mission, Pharr): Either works fine. Salt isn't a factor.
  • Cameron coastal (Port Isabel, South Padre Island, Laguna Vista, Bayview): Strongly consider standing-seam metal with stainless fasteners. Salt air destroys cheap shingle nailing in 5–8 years.

5. Aesthetic preference + HOA?

  • Most RGV neighborhoods: shingles look more "expected"; metal stands out.
  • Some HOAs restrict metal entirely — check your covenants before committing.
  • Premium home aesthetics: Standing-seam metal in a designer color (slate gray, copper) reads as upscale.

The default recommendation for most RGV homeowners

Class 4 architectural shingles. They're the right answer for the homeowner who: - Plans to stay 8–20 years - Has a $12,000–$18,000 budget - Wants insurance discount - Lives in inland RGV - Has standard residential aesthetics

This describes ~70% of the homeowners who call us.

When to override the default

| Scenario | Override to |
|----------|-------------|
| Coastal home + 10+ year ownership | Standing-seam metal |
| AC bills > $400/month + 15+ year ownership | Standing-seam metal (5–25% AC savings) |
| Tight budget + selling within 5 years | 3-tab shingles (cheapest legitimate option) |
| Premium home + designer aesthetics | Standing-seam metal in copper or slate gray |
| Agricultural or workshop building | Screw-down metal panels |
| Spanish/Mediterranean architecture | Clay or concrete tile (if framing supports) |

What we won't recommend

  • Metal over existing shingles without tear-off. Voids warranties; traps moisture.
  • Cheap (Class 1) shingles for a primary residence. The savings are eaten by faster failure + no insurance discount.
  • Coatings like Roof Maxx as a replacement for an aging roof. They buy 3–5 years; they don't replace a roof.

The 30-second test

Answer this: "How long will I own this home?"

  • Under 7: shingles
  • 7–14: shingles unless coastal
  • 15+: get a metal quote alongside the shingle quote, compare the math

That's the entire decision framework for 90% of RGV homeowners.
