Owens Corning Shingles in the Rio Grande Valley

May 13, 20266 min read

Owens Corning is one of three big shingle manufacturers serving the RGV (alongside GAF and CertainTeed). Here's what's actually worth installing in South Texas.

The product lineup

Owens Corning shingles for residential roofing fall into 4 tiers:

### 1. Supreme (3-tab) The basic 3-tab shingle. We don't recommend it — too short a lifespan in RGV heat (12-15 years) and no insurance discount.

### 2. Oakridge (architectural, entry-level) Decent budget architectural shingle. 110 mph wind warranty. 18-22 year lifespan. Limited algae resistance. Skip this — for ~$1,500 more you can move up to a much better product.

### 3. TruDefinition Duration (architectural, recommended baseline) Owens Corning's flagship architectural shingle. SureNail Technology = 130 mph wind warranty. 25-30 year RGV lifespan. StreakGuard algae resistance. This is what we install for most customers.

### 4. Duration STORM / TruDefinition Duration Storm CR (Class 4 impact) The Class 4 impact-resistant tier. Same SureNail base + reinforced mat for hail resistance. UL-2218 Class 4 rated. Qualifies for 10-25% Texas insurance discount. Recommended upgrade for any RGV home that gets spring hail.

How Owens Corning compares to competitors

| Brand | Flagship architectural | Class 4 product | RGV lifespan | |-------|------------------------|-----------------|--------------| | GAF | Timberline HDZ | Timberline AS II | 25-28 yr | | Owens Corning | Duration TruDefinition | Duration STORM | 25-30 yr | | CertainTeed | Landmark Pro | Landmark IR | 22-26 yr |

All three are competitive. Slight edges: - Owens Corning SureNail = best wind rating (130 mph) - GAF StainGuard Plus = best algae resistance for South Texas humidity - CertainTeed = widest color selection

Insurance discount specifics

Texas carriers that explicitly approve Owens Corning impact-resistant products for discount: - State Farm: 10-15% - Allstate: 12-25% - USAA: 15-25% - Farmers: 10-20% - Liberty Mutual: 8-15% - Travelers: 10-20%

Lifespan in RGV heat

Properly ventilated attic + 6-nail install + premium underlayment: - TruDefinition Duration: 25-30 years typical, manufacturer warranty 50 years - Duration STORM (Class 4): 25-32 years typical, same warranty

Inadequate attic ventilation cuts these numbers by 5-10 years regardless of brand. See [Why Inadequate Ventilation Kills RGV Roofs](/blog/why-inadequate-ventilation-kills-rgv-roofs).

Color selection for the RGV

Light to medium colors typically perform best in RGV heat. Popular RGV-appropriate Duration colors: - Driftwood (light tan) - Estate Gray (medium gray) - Quarry Gray (charcoal but with reflective granules) - Sand Castle (warm beige)

Avoid pure black or very dark colors — they cook in 100°F+ summer.

Common questions

### Why recommend Duration over Oakridge?

The price difference is small (~$1,500 on a typical home), the wind rating jump is huge (110 → 130 mph), and Duration's algae resistance is much better.

### Do you carry all the Duration colors?

Authorized dealers stock common colors. Specialty colors are typically 1-3 week lead times.

### Can I see samples?

Yes. We bring physical product samples to every estimate.

### What's the warranty registration process?

Owens Corning warranty must be registered within 60 days of install. We do this for you and provide written confirmation.
